Gangotri

Gangotri is situated at an altitude of approximately 3,100 meters above sea level in the Uttarkashi district of Uttarakhand. The town lies on the banks of the Bhagirathi River, surrounded by the Garhwal Himalayan range.

The actual source of the Ganga — the Gaumukh Glacier — lies about 19 km from Gangotri, making the region geologically and spiritually significant.

Gangotri holds a central place in Hindu mythology. According to legend, King Bhagirath performed intense penance here to bring Goddess Ganga down from heaven to cleanse the souls of his ancestors.

The Gangotri Temple was built in the early 18th century by Amar Singh Thapa, a Gorkha commander. The region remains deeply rooted in Vedic traditions, rituals, and Himalayan culture.
