OVERVIEW
Chopta is a small settlement and valley that is located in Uttarakhand, which is very popular among tourists, mainly because of the number of options it provides for exploring, adventure buffs and trekking enthusiasts. The entire region is a haven of beauty, specially for the ones who are looking for a good place to relax, without the hustle and bustle of a typical tourist hotspot. One can visit Chopta valley and gaze in awe at the many peaks located a short distance away from the valley.
Chopta is also a base for trekking to Tungnath, third temple of Panch Kedar, which lies 3.5 kilometres uphill.
This unspoiled natural destination lying in the lap of Himalayas, offers vistas of the imposing Himalayan range including Trishul, Nanda Devi and Chaukhamba. It is located at an elevation of 2,680 metres (8,790 ft) above sea level. Chopta village is surrounded by forests of pine, deodar and rhododendron and is rich in flora and fauna include rare species of birds and musk deer. Chopta also popularly known as ‘Mini Switzerland’ of India, lies 29 km from Ukhimath and 162 kms from Rishikesh on the road from Gopeshwar to Guptkashi.
The Chopta – Tungnath – Chandrashila trek is a famous destinations for trekkers. The Chopta region has many treks and trails cutting through jungles and grasslands. Chandrashilla, Tunganath and Devariyatal are the best known trekking routes in the Chopta region. Because of an abundance of birds, Chopta is becoming popular among birdwatchers.

TUNGNATH TEMPLE
Situated amongst the wondrous mountains of Tungnath in the Rudraprayag District, Tungnath Temple is the highest Shiva temple in the world nestled at an altitude of 3680 meters. It is one of the Panch Kedars and is believed to have belonged to an ancient era almost 1000 years old. The foundation of this temple was laid down by Arjuna who was the third of the Pandava brothers. It was built in the North Indian style of architecture and has a dozen shrines of other Gods surrounding the temple. There are numerous tales associated with the place including the one where Lord Ram carried out meditation to get himself released from the curse of Brahmahatya for killing Ravana.
DEORIA TAL
The Deoria Tal is located on the Ukhimath-Gopeshwar road and is reached by a 2 km trek through Sari Village. Visiting the Deoria Tal is a wholesome experience in itself, passing the village and collecting snippets of its daily life through your camera, and if possible, then conversing with the village inhabitants.
The lake is surrounded by pines in multitude and clearly mirrors these pines and the Chaukhamba peaks once still. The lake itself is one of the chief attractions of Chopta, with tons of visitors thronging it during peak season.
Kanchula Korak
The Kanchula Korak Deer Musk Sanctuary houses the famous Musk Deer and more importantly, and abundance of lush green vegetation, a lot of varieties of which are claimed by locals to have not even been scientifically classified yet.
Sprawled over an area of 5 sq. km, you can spend a larger bit of your day here, lazing around with a pair of binoculars to explore the place.

Trekking
Chandrashila can be reached after a little more than 1km trek from Tungnath. From Chandrashila once can enjoy 360-degree panoromic views of the gigantic Himalayas. Chandrashila is the highest point of the mountain on which Tungnath Temple and Chopta are located. Chandrashila is situated at an astonishing altitude of 4090mts above sea level.
Bird Watching
Away from the hustle and bustle of city life, surrounded by nature’s beauty all around, Chopta is a paradise for bird lovers. From the sound of the chirping of birds early in the morning to the buzz of their daily activities in the noon, Chopta is the happy place of a rich variety of western Himalayan birds.

Camping in Chopta is one of the best way to explore the region which is full of adventure. For adventure seekers and nature lovers camping is a good way to enjoy its tranquility, greenery and beautiful panoramic scenic view of snow clad Himalayan peaks.
